Why we started LongTable

Brian McFarlane and Ryan Smits have long volunteered for clubs, schools, and community groups. Both volunteer with the Penguin Ski Club and spent years on its board.

In group after group, running the club got in the way. Records sat in spreadsheets, payment apps, and inboxes, and they often left with the officer who kept them. The more work a job took, the harder it was to find someone to take it on.

Their wives ran PTA school auction fundraisers and saw the same problems up close.

So Brian and Ryan started LongTable. It keeps a club's roster, dues, events, RSVPs, and website in one account that belongs to the club, so a new officer starts with the club's full records.

The people behind LongTable

  • Brian McFarlane

    Brian McFarlane

    Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer

Brian has spent more than 30 years running technology for other people. He has led IT teams at universities, a product design firm, and a software company. Much of that work was replacing many separate systems with a few that work together.

As a volunteer, he has taught climbing and skiing and advised a college's software degree program. He has also served on the board of a high school girls' lacrosse team, where he looks after the website and the tools that reach players, coaches, and families. He believes clubs like these are how neighbors get to know each other.

  • Ryan Smits

    Ryan Smits

    Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer

Ryan has spent more than 20 years building software and the teams that build it. He co-founded and ran a software consulting firm, where he handled contracts, hiring, and mentoring along with the engineering. Later he led engineering teams in online real estate, climate modeling, and marketing analytics. At one company he grew a small engineering team into a much larger one.

He cares about software that keeps working for years, and about teams that know why they're building it. Clubs need both, because the people running them change every year or two. He has seen how much a club gives the people in it, and how much it asks of the few who run it.

  • Cooper

    Cooper

    Quality Assurance Engineer, Outdoor Division

Cooper is the team dog. He's happiest outside in the mountains, whether that's backcountry skiing, trail running, or swimming at the lake.

He likes any club that gets him outdoors. His only feature request is more time outside.
